I just got this Email and thought I'd pass it on.
To our valued customers,
A year ago, Sportsmans Warehouse entered into a merger agreement with Great American Outdoors, parent company of Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops. Effective December 2, 2021, that merger agreement was terminated. We at Sportsmans Warehouse are excited to continue operating as a separate, independent and publicly-traded company (NASDAQ: SPWH).
As we enter 2022, we look forward to continuing our strong growth adding more stores, improving Sportsmans.com, and expanding our product assortment and services. Our mission to provide outstanding gear and exceptional service remains unchanged.
You might want to check their prices, they've jacked them up to much. I went to Scheels a couple weeks before Christmas to use a gift card I had, I bought a bunch of lures, soft plastics ect. Went to Sportsman's Warehouse afterwards to see if they had any of the items that Scheels was out of. I then decided to check their prices verse Scheels and EVERLY single item that was exactly the same as Scheels, same brand, same company, same everything was more expensive.
I got the same email. I agree with both Yard Dogs and Icemaster. Im done with Cabelas/BassPro, their prices are the highest and they invariably are out of the patterns and colors I want. Scheels has been the cheapest and best for the stuff I already know and are cheaper than even Wal-Mart. But we dont have a Scheels on the West Slope and Sportsmans has always had more of the brands I use without pushing the house brand at higher prices like the Cabelas a mile away. If I need a rod tip replaced or a spool filled, they do a great job and have excellent customer service.
This is good news even just from a monopoly standpoint. I remember when I heard BPS and Cabelas was going to buy out SW, and I was like . So what, that just leaves Gander Mountain and Scheels for competition other than the local shops? Anymore I do prefer to support local places anyway, especially since I can get all the same stuff from BPS/ Cabelas for less cost which I know has already been mentioned but it bears repeating, lol.
It's not really about price anymore for me. It's about convenience and selection. If the price is good too that's a bonus. Main thing is I like to see what I am buying, so I don't like to order online unless it's stuff I know and get often.
I live 2 mins from a Jax, and I spend lots of time and money there. I want to be able to drive to Sportman's Warehouse or Scheels and just have different selection to choose from. I hate driving across town to look at the same stuff. I've gladly spent an extra $5 on a lure at the marina store or the local bait shop 1. because it came with some advice and 2. because they have different stuff.
Glad to see Sportman's stay independent, and I hope they can find how to stay competitive yet different.
I have never been to a Scheels, but have heard good things. I do wish they would open one up on the Western Slope. Until then I will remain a Sportsmans Warehouse customer
I got this notice as well. This is a good news to customers for sure! Personally I do not love or hate specific stores, I just like to have alternatives. Cabela's used to be a very good store, but we all saw what happened after merged with BassPro, it is just another BassPro.
Great news. Not going to be hard for Sportsmans to stay competitive and different--BPS and Cabelas aren't serious outdoor stores anymore. They're a lifestyle brand.
Personally, Sportsman's has been one of the worst companies I have bought outdoor gear from. I always have problems with them. I haven't had any serious issues with Cabelas/BP. They're all corporate giants that only care about your pocket book. Once you realize that, it makes buying from a small local shop or small business a little easier. You might pay slightly more and wait 1 whole day longer for shipping, but think its worth it. At the end of the day, this is AMERICA and you can spend your money however the heck you want!
Keep it tight, fish still bite at night!

I'm with coyute, I live in Estes and still drive down to Bennetts in Berthoud. Awesome place!!!
I always liked sportsman. They always had a lot of the cant find or different selections of fishing gear and lures. This past couple of years has kind of went down hill or so it seems. They kind of stopped carrying some the higher end or quality fishing gear. It might just be me though. Some of the rods and reels reminded me of walking through walleyworld. I hope they bring back some the quality of fishing stuff.
I still go to most of the sporting good shops just changed how much money I spend in certain ones. Bass pro/ cabelas doesnt get much from me anymore.
First off guys I work part time at Sportmans. Most of you have a point good and bad. However every aspect of our economy has been effected. Seriously gasoline, groceries, you name it, all have seen price increases. We are no different. Products cost more, businesses charge more. As far as customer service goes, Ive shopped every store mentioned. Sportmans has always treated me well thats why I work there. How many guys ever give advice, share techniques, put you on the right flies. Then help you pick a great rod based on your price point.
All of you know cheap and good arent mentioned in the same sentence. I have been lobbying for the higher end products. Especially for online sales. Because not everyone expects bottom dollar prices. They want quality and expect to pay for it. Products just like the fly shops have. Im trying to get our customers to realize that we really do have personal that are knowledgeable. We are also avid hunters and fisherman ourselves.
Our customers tell me all the time that we have a better selection than BPS or Cabelas. Not to say we havent had empty shelves and low stock. Covid has not helped with supply and demand.
Im proud to be at Sportmans. If I can make one persons day, Im happy. Ive had many people come tell me your advice was spot on. Like the guy that I told to get some wine colored SJ for the dream stream too. He came in a week later. Grinning ear to ear, you were right... the wine out fished everything else. My buddys told me to get more. Thats a win.
i2, refresh my memory, which SW are you at? I really liked the store they had in Littletown on S Wadsworth back in the day, then I would trek to 84th & I25 till the River Pointe Sheridan store opened. If I dont go to Discount Tackle with Austin and his crew, Ill hit up River Pointe. Have not been into Jax or Scheels cus there is not one any where near Kipling-Bowles..
ADub, Im at 84th & I-25. If your headed north on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday morning stop in. I work 9-2pm. BTW I couldnt be happier that the merger didnt go through.
@I2 You made a good point. Last year my wife, who knows nothing about fishing, went to your SW store and bought me an unbelievable birthday gift. Like for the first time in our entire marriage I was blown away by the gift. She had a really knowledgeable and friendly guy help her pick some stuff out.
Here's how I know that guy really just wanted to help. I painfully decided to take back the expensive rod she picked out, mainly because my b-day is in December and I was focused on the ice fishing season. I really wanted to exchange it for a flip over shelter, but they did not have the one I wanted. When I decided to return it, the same guy that sold it to my wife was working and he had to come inspect it before they would give me a refund. He told me he remembered my wife and picking out the rod, and was really curious why I was returning it. I told him I loved everything he picked out, rod in question included, but just really was in the market for a flip over they did not have. He tried to see about ordering it, etc. He seemed genuinely disappointed I was leaving without what I wanted, and I prefer to think that was the case and not that he lost a commission or something like that. Point is, you don't typically get that level of service at BP or Cabela's.
Wreckstar, if she shopped at the Thornton store. That was me you both worked with. Your story sure seems to fit a recent memory. No we do not get commission.
